Tough weekend for Seniors
Barton 1sts made the short trip to Ipplepen CC - the early pace-setters in their division - on Saturday. Ipplepen won the toss and elected to bat and Barton openers Jon Martin and Gilly set to work
The decision to bat looked like a good one with the batsmen scoring freely and reaching 46 without loss before Matty Lipton broke the opening partnership up. The Barton attack then steadied the ship by slowing the home sides scoring and taking regular wickets. After an excellent spell by Bowks (9.0-2-31-4) the Ipplepen innings closed on 175 for 9.
The Barton innings got under way and was in trouble almost immediately. The Ipplepen opening bowlers reducing the innings to 9 for 4 wickets at one stage. Despite a skippers knock of 45 from Parks, the Barton batsmen never really recovered from the early setbacks, with Beechy (30) and Matty Lipton (13) the only other players to reach double figures. Barton were dismissed for 138 inside 38 overs to lose by 37 runs.
The 2nds hosted a very strong Paignton side with a number of well known players in it - in an early season top 3 clash. JP won the toss and took the 'Barton Option' to field.
Ports and Coley opened the attack and kept things tight early on, and had a fair measure of success reducing the visitors to 43 for 4 before a spirited fight back and a partnership of 98 steadied the ship for Paignton. The Paignton innings closed on 194 for 7 with Coley (2-33) and Jacky Bell (2-26) the pick of the Barton Bowlers. A target that proved to be more than enough
The Paignton attack made early inroads getting both the Jarman boys out early, before Coley (40) and Ports (38) put on 74 for the 3rd wicket. After that the going was really tough with only Jarms (10) and Jacky Bell (19) managing double figures. JP and Pete Gartrell made the Paignton bowlers work and batted for points at the tail, avoiding giving additional bowling points to the visitors and working for additional batting points for the home team. Barton 2nds finished their innings on 141 for 8 off their allotted overs for their first defeat of the year by 53 runs.
Barton will be looking to regroup after a tough few days of cricket, for next weeks fixtures. The firsts host Abbotskerswell CC at home, whilst the seconds take the short journey to Two Mile Oak (Abbotskerswell).
